- Managing Energy
What is EPI?
EPIs use historic weather data to show how differences in temperature affect how much energy you use.
The simplest approach is to compare the average ambient temperature; obviously if it is colder outside then you would expect to use more energy. However, this approach does not take any account of the temperature you need to maintain in your greenhouse.
A better approach is to use day degrees. To get a full explanation of degree days, how they are calculated and how to use them, click here.
Two sets of EPI data are given for Northern and Southern locations. Use the location nearest to your nursery to get up-to-date information for average temperatures and degree days.
Because solar radiation also affects how your crops grow and how much energy you use, weekly radiation data is also available.
